A typical day whilst on a Student Experience……

We hope that there won’t be such a thing as a "typical day", as we really don’t want one day to be similar to another, but what we are aiming for is unique experiences at all times! A brief description of a few days in your Student conservation experience is given…

  • Dinner
  • Bed time

  • Own time till when we go out again: updating trackings and sighting on the maps, swimming pool, library, catching up on correspondence, siesta…..
  • Afternoon mission: Logistical planning and execution: getting everything ready for the next day’s camping experience. Lists are made and checked as your group will go camping the next day. All the tents, mattresses, cooking utensils, rations, drinks, etc. are packed and sorted, and every person in the group will be designated with a specific duty: the key word is teamwork! You must plan your own menu for the three days as well and select all the ingredients before you leave! Discussions and planning for this expedition with your guide, you have seen a bit of Africa now and where would you like to go camping….the vehicle and trailer will be packed and loaded and ready to leave the next morning.
  • Brief discussions on safety, hygiene, handling of situations will be given.
  • Dinner
  • Bed time….
Day 5
  • Wake-up will be 30 minutes before sunrise.
  • Coffee or tea with rusks.
  • Mass Capture! - Depending on what we capture it is something to experience. No words can explain what happens and nobody knows what we might get.
  • This is a big learning experience: interpret signs, sightings, plan your camp as this will be your home for the next three days…..
  • Brunch/lunch: you can divide into pairs with cooking duties, etc. There are no set rules, each group determine their own ways and standards. You can ask the guide for guidance…..Firewood needs to be collected, toilet must be set up, showers, kitchen area…..
  • Own time till when we go out again later in the afternoon: the essence of these outings are on interpreting signs and tracks and learning how to cope in the wild under camp conditions. We will go for a short walk, climb small hills and see what can be seen. Why do check the wind when we walk around? What do we do if we walk into a black rhino? Or a lion? What must I do if I stumble over a snake…!?
  • Get back just before dark to camp.
  • Evening life around a campfire: a meal will be prepared where everybody participates with all the ingredients, whether it is a barbeque or a stew or bread in a pot….all this will be shown and demonstrated.
  • Dinner under huge starlit skies…. The stars and night sounds will be awesome and you can learn about constellations and the Southern Cross and the Milky Way and Orion’s Belt…..
  • Bed time….
  • Day 6
      image
    • Wake-up in the bush is different than at the lodge….chances will be that you are awake by yourself 30 minutes before sunrise in any case….
    • Water has to be boiled on the fire for the usual coffee or tea with rusks.
    • Leave camp for the morning’s mission, which will be determined by what is going on in that area of the camp. This can vary from a morning walk to the tracking of a specific animal with the vehicle.
    • Track other radio-collared animals if they are known in a specific area.
    • Interpret signs, sightings and other interesting things on the way there and back.
    • Back to camp just before midday
    • Brunch/lunch: again this has to be prepared on an open fire…..you would have had the change to set up your own menu beforehand.
    • Own time till when we go out again: chances are good that the camp will be set with a magnificent view overlooking a drinking place so you can watch game at your own leisure or do the Namibian siesta…..
    • Afternoon mission: walk, tracking or whatever is decided.
    • Track other radio-collared animals if they are known in a specific area and maybe spend time with them depending what is found.
    • Dinner might be prepared early in order to go out on a late nocturnal drive to see different animals….
    • Bed time…
    • These are just examples of days and activities………
